The village has loads of great places to eat, local shops, and even a nature reserve. Both locals and visitors really enjoy spending time there.
A pretty village right in the middle of Derbyshire has been called a "hidden gem". It has so much to offer and is the perfect spot to explore this summer. If you’ve never been to Duffield, now might be the time.
This quiet village is in the Amber Valley area of Derbyshire, sitting along the west side of the River Derwent.
Oscar Fisher, a writer for Derbyshire Live, went to visit and was really impressed. Even though it was a calm Wednesday afternoon, the village was still full of life.
He wrote: “I quickly noticed that the village clearly looks after itself – and the row of shops and local businesses on the high street really shows that.”
On Duffield’s high street, you’ll find some familiar names like a Birds Bakery, a friendly local pub, and a range of restaurants and salons.
Some standout places to eat include The Viceroy, a highly rated Indian restaurant, the Pattenmakers Arms which serves traditional British meals with a twist, and Angelo’s Bistro at The King’s Head where you can try proper Italian food.
But there’s more to Duffield than just food and shopping. What makes it different from other villages is that it has lots of things for people to do.
Within just 10 minutes on foot, you can get to Duffield Tennis Club, a peaceful nature reserve that leads to a cricket pitch, a golf course, and even an old castle ruin.
One of the village’s most fun surprises happens every September. The Duffield Scarecrow Trail, part of the Duffield Arts Festival, is a yearly event where locals create scarecrows based on fun themes like music, movies or sports.
Around 60 scarecrows are placed all over the village – in gardens, by roads and on grass verges – showing off the fun and creative spirit that makes Derbyshire special.
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
