The UK is full of pretty villages that feel as though time has stood still for hundreds of years.
From cobbled lanes to tucked away waterfalls, these places are packed with little surprises waiting to be explored.
One village that stands out is this hidden gem in Lancashire, which feels like stepping straight into the past.
Set within the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Downham is often described as being frozen in time.
There are no road signs, television aerials or satellite dishes in the village, which makes it look like a real life postcard.
Sandy, a London based travel influencer on Instagram, recently visited and said that Downham is also home to mystical spots such as the Pendle Sculpture Trail, the reportedly haunted Samlesbury Hall and the Harry Potter style bookshop, Halewood and Sons.
She added: “Another favourite of ours was the hidden Hatch Brook waterfall, which was definitely not easy to track down.”
When it comes to history, people are believed to have settled in Downham more than 1,000 years ago, and the village has been carefully preserved ever since.
Many of the stone cottages are several hundred years old, with the oldest house dating back to 1580.
Downham’s timeless look has made it a popular filming location for period dramas including Whistle Down the Wind and Born and Bred.
Visitors today can enjoy historic surroundings along with modern comforts. The Assheton Arms pub offers hearty meals, and the nearby Greendale View Tearoom is ideal for a sweet afternoon treat.
