Tucked just a few miles from Newcastle, this seaside treasure draws visitors with its striking castle ruins and much-loved beaches, making it the perfect place to escape the busy city life.
With a long stretch of coast, pretty streets, and a strong sense of history, this northern town has won over plenty of fans, yet it remains a hidden secret to many holidaymakers.
Although spots like Whitby, Scarborough and Blackpool usually take the spotlight when it comes to coastal breaks, this overlooked gem has now been officially ranked as one of the best lesser-known destinations in Britain.
A new study by Betway looked at more than 50 towns across the country, judging them on independent shops, cultural landmarks, restaurants, music events, TikTok mentions and even average summer temperatures.
Tynemouth landed in fourth place overall and claimed the title of the most underrated seaside town in the North of England.
Only eight miles away from Newcastle, this lively coastal town is well known to locals, but still feels like a fresh discovery for first-time visitors.
Tynemouth is rich in history, with the dramatic remains of Tynemouth Priory and Castle standing high above the sea.
The site, rated four stars and above by most visitors, has more than 2,000 years of history as a home to monks, royalty and soldiers, and today offers incredible views over the North Sea.

But Tynemouth isn’t just about the past. Its beaches, including King Edward’s Bay and Longsands, are among the most popular in the country.
Often ranked as some of Europe’s best city beaches, they draw surfers, swimmers, dog walkers and families all year round.
During the summer, the golden sands and clear waters make it a perfect seaside getaway, even with average summer temperatures sitting at just 14.3°C.
The town is also well known for its buzzing arts and music scene, hosting 84 live music events, more than many larger places across the UK.
Another highlight is Tynemouth Market, held each weekend in the Victorian Metro station. Here visitors can browse antiques, vinyl records, books and sample tasty street food.

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
