Scotland is set for another spell of fine weather. With temperatures expected to climb above 25C in parts of the country, many people will be heading to the coast to cool down.
A new ranking of Scotland’s best beaches has been released by The Times. One spot praised in the list is this hidden gem, which sits at the mouth of the River Halladale.
It lies on the north coast of Scotland along the famous North Coast 500 driving route.
Melvich Beach is shaped like a crescent and backed by sand dunes. At low tide, it reveals a wide stretch of golden sand perfect for exploring.
The Times described it as a “wide curve of ochre sand” and noted that the beach is dog-friendly, making it a great choice for pet owners.
It was also highlighted as being ideal for campervans, thanks to its spacious parking.
The nearby Melvich Bay Caravan Park was praised too, offering hard-standing pitches as well as modern toilets and showers.
The Times explained: “A large parking area sits just off the A836, and from there a short walk over the dunes leads to a sweeping bay of ochre sand.
“The River Halladale flows into the sea on the right, while to the left, the Melvich Bay Caravan Park provides pitches, electrical hook-ups and incredible sunrise views over the bay.”
Close to the harbour, visitors will also find a memorial to sailors who lost their lives in local waters. It remembers three major tragedies that happened in 1848, 1890 and 1918.
The Times added: “A simple but moving walk takes you west around the bay to Portskerra Harbour. Here, a memorial honours 26 local fishermen who died in storms, within sight of the very place you stand.”
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
