Uncover a hidden treasure on the North Yorkshire coast, where a quiet bay and stunning beach are waiting to be explored.
A “picture-perfect” village in North Yorkshire has been named one of the best hidden gems in England, and it’s not hard to see why.
This hidden gem, tucked away just nine miles north of Whitby between Sandsend and Staithes, has impressed visitors with its “peaceful” bay, “beautiful” beach and “incredible views,” reports York Press.
The pretty village, perched right on the North Sea, has scored an impressive 4.5 out of 5 on Tripadvisor, and has now been recognised by outdoor specialists Millets in their new travel guide.
The experts put together their list of the best hidden gems in Britain using tips from Reddit, TikTok and travel blogs, before checking Tripadvisor reviews to find the top-rated spots.
Millets blogger and outdoor fan Sam Chadwick said: “More people than ever are discovering the joys of the outdoors, with hotspots like Mam Tor and Scafell Pike growing more popular. We’ve created a list of England’s best hidden gems for those who want to avoid the crowds and still enjoy the great outdoors.”
And Runswick Bay is a perfect example.
The official website calls it “a picture postcard North Yorkshire coastal village, boasting a mile of quiet bay and stunning beach”. The spot is popular with fossil hunters, walkers and those hoping to glimpse dolphins or seals in the sea.
The sandy beach is part of the Cleveland Way, a famous coastal path. Families can build sandcastles and explore rockpools at low tide, while at high tide, a jetty makes an ideal place for crabbing.
“Seals, dolphins and even whales have been seen in the waters, which are also great for fishing, especially cod and mackerel,” the website notes.
Visitors have left more than 400 glowing Tripadvisor reviews, with many praising the “relaxing” beachfront café.
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
