A stunning Devon village has remained a favourite for years, drawing visitors who return time and again to soak up its charm.
A writer from Devon Live recently visited the beautiful seaside village of Lynmouth to find out what makes it so special, with many people saying there’s something truly magical about the place that keeps them coming back every year.
Holidaymakers Dave and Jill described it perfectly: “It’s beautiful; it’s like a mini Switzerland.”
That comparison goes back to the 1800s when travellers and poets of the Romantic era said Lynmouth’s dramatic valley reminded them of the Alps.
Today, the steep hills, stone cottages and riverside views give Lynmouth a character that feels timeless.
Another couple, Karen and Mark Turner, agreed: “We’re on holiday and have been here before. If you imagined the perfect Devon village and tried to draw it, Lynmouth is exactly what you’d create.”
They added: “Nothing’s really changed since our last visit. It’s so peaceful at this time of year, we honestly don’t want to leave.”
Claudine Spiteri, who runs Lone Pine Art Retreats in the village, says there’s something truly unique about the atmosphere in Lynmouth.
She explained: “It’s a really special place, and we’re lucky to have such incredible scenery all around us. Being surrounded by nature is so good for the soul.”
“It’s so remote that it feels a bit like a rainforest, with the woodland meeting the sea. Lynmouth has its own little micro-climate, it’s so lush, green, and full of life.”
Claudine also praised the people who live there: “There’s a great community here, full of interesting and creative people. Everyone has an artistic streak, you could say it attracts free spirits. It’s what makes the village so different.”
Chrissy, who runs Post House Interiors, agrees that Lynmouth’s charm comes from both its beautiful surroundings and its friendly, creative locals.
She said: “You can set off on so many amazing walks right from your doorstep, along the river, through the woods, up into the hills or along the coast. It’s perfect for hiking, and you don’t even need a car to explore it all.”
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
