Tucked away in North Yorkshire, around seven miles from Pickering, this lovely village draws both visitors and locals who want a calm and gentle pace of life.
In the Ryedale district sits this hidden gem, a small but enchanting village set within the stunning North York Moors National Park.
It offers the perfect classic English escape, with sheep grazing on the greens, cottages topped with red roofs and a peaceful stream winding through the centre.
One of the main attractions here, helping people learn about the village’s past, is the Ryedale Folk Museum, which celebrates the area’s cultural history.
The museum includes a range of buildings that show what life was like in different times, from a blacksmith’s forge to a Victorian schoolroom.
One TripAdvisor reviewer said: “This was my third visit, and each time I spot something new because there is so much to see.
It’s not the kind of museum filled with information boards; it is real buildings and objects. You get to see what a great hall or roundhouse was really like.”
Another wrote: “Our first visit here, and we were not disappointed. We loved exploring all the different areas, and it was really interesting to learn about the history, almost like stepping back in time.”
The village has a pub, a tearoom and a handful of pretty shops selling gifts, crafts and souvenirs.
They are perfect for a gentle wander before heading out on a longer walk. Hutton le Hole has also appeared on both television and film, including the BBC’s Death Comes to Pemberley and the outdoor series Robson Green’s Weekend Escapes.
The unusual name comes from the old English phrase Hoh Tun, meaning a settlement on a spur of land or high farm.
Even the name shows how much wild countryside surrounds Hutton le Hole, making it a wonderful spot for walkers and nature lovers.
Scenic walking routes include a moderately challenging 15 kilometre circular trail across the moorland, which takes a little over four hours. There is also a gentler option, guiding you on a 6.4 kilometre walk to Lastingham, linking the two villages for a pleasant day out.
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
