Hidden away on a quieter part of the Pembrokeshire coastline is a beach that feels perfect for anyone who loves peace and quiet.
Unlike the popular bays filled with day-trippers, this secret spot gives you the chance to enjoy the sea, sand and scenery with barely anyone else around.
Many people who visit say they often have the whole stretch of golden sand to themselves, with only the sound of the waves and seabirds in the background.
Traeth Llyfn sits slightly off the main route, tucked between Porthgain and Abereiddi, with no road leading directly to it.
The only access is down a steep metal staircase fixed into the tall slate cliffs, a route that some find exciting and others a little scary.
These steps have an unusual past. They were put into the cliffs during the Second World War by Italian prisoners of war, leaving behind a small but fascinating piece of history.
Once you’ve made it down the stairs, you’re greeted by a wide sandy beach that’s perfect for all sorts of outdoor activities. It’s a brilliant place for playing games, building sandcastles or just relaxing in the sunshine with a book.
Dogs are welcome too, and the beach is so open that they can run around freely without bothering anyone, which is rare for some parts of Pembrokeshire.
Around the edges, the beach is lined with rocks and small pools, offering plenty of spots to explore. Rock pooling is especially popular, with crabs, starfish and other tiny sea creatures hiding among the stones.
Surfers and confident swimmers also enjoy the beach, but it’s important to be careful. Traeth Llyfn can have strong waves and rip currents, and there are no lifeguards on duty. The tide can also block off certain areas, so visitors need to stay aware.
TripAdvisor reviews often describe Traeth Llyfn as peaceful, whether you visit during school holidays or quieter times of year.
One family shared that after years of staying in campervans and yurts nearby, their children always say it’s their “best holiday ever.”
They spend days hunting for shells, watching crabs and playing in the shallow pools, before enjoying picnics on the hills with lovely views.
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
