Often missed in favour of busier seaside spots like Whitby Beach, this lovely five-mile stretch of soft golden sand has become a real favourite with families, dog walkers, and anyone who enjoys peaceful sea views and clean shores.
With an impressive 4.7 out of 5 score on TripAdvisor, this beach is rated higher than both Whitby and Scarborough.
Running from Filey Brigg in the north to Bempton Cliffs in the south, which is home to a well-loved RSPB reserve, the beach reveals a huge spread of smooth, tidy sand at low tide, sometimes stretching almost a quarter of a mile wide.
Filey has been recognised in the 2025 Yorkshire Coast Seaside Awards and often meets Blue Flag standards for its clean sand and safe water.
It is a brilliant place for long walks, flying kites, building sandcastles, and even enjoying a horse ride along the shore.
To the north, Filey Brigg is a rocky point that’s perfect for rock pooling and marks the start or end of the famous Cleveland Way coastal trail.
Unlike some of Yorkshire’s busier beaches, Filey still feels calm and traditional, with its strong fishing history easy to spot today.
Visitors may even catch sight of local fishermen using their old-fashioned wooden “coble” boats.
Along the seafront, a classic promenade runs beside the sand, complete with a Sculpture Trail that features artwork celebrating Filey’s seaside past and the wildlife found along the coast.
The pieces were designed by artist Russ Coleman alongside local people, and the sculptures were crafted with help from Mark Powers and Saffron Waghorn.
Filey town itself is full of cute shops, cosy cafés, and a good choice of pubs and restaurants.
Just a short drive away, the dramatic RSPB Bempton Cliffs rise more than 300 feet above the sea and are home to thousands of seabirds, including puffins, gannets, and kittiwakes.
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
