The beauty of Britain in autumn is hard to miss, with cool, fresh air and colourful countryside all around.
This time of year is perfect for walking holidays, especially when you can finish the day in a cosy village pub or rest in a charming cottage after exploring.
One place that should be high on every traveller’s list is this hidden gem, an “extraordinary landscape” full of limestone rocks, sparkling lakes, deep gorges, and scenic walking trails, according to travel experts.
Often called “Somerset’s best-kept secret”, it’s easy to see why locals might want to keep this stunning Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to themselves.
With more than 600 walking routes to choose from, there’s something for everyone, whether you’re up for a tough hike or just a gentle stroll the whole family can enjoy.
The Mendip Way is one of the most popular trails, stretching 50 miles and passing through lovely towns like Weston-super-Mare, Cheddar (where you can enjoy amazing views from Cheddar Gorge), Wells, Shepton Mallet, and Frome, reports The Mirror.
Depending on how fast you walk, the whole route can take between three and five days to complete.
One of the best things about visiting the Mendip Hills is that you won’t be surrounded by huge crowds of tourists while enjoying the incredible scenery.
Earlier this year, a study by Cottages.com looked into the UK’s most overlooked staycation spots, focusing on things like hiking and cycling paths, beautiful views, the number of pubs in each area, and how easy it is to find last-minute accommodation.
The Mendip Hills came out on top, thanks to their wide range of attractions, welcoming country pubs, and breathtaking walking trails.
The study said: “With dramatic gorges and peaceful walking paths, the Mendip Hills are Somerset’s hidden gem.
Featuring places like Cheddar Gorge and Wookey Hole, this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is perfect for a last-minute getaway full of adventure and family fun, without the busy crowds.”
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
