Sitting on the LlÅ·n Peninsula in North Wales is one of the most unusual beaches in the UK, Porthor.
Often called ‘Whistling Sands’, this beach has a strange little trick where the sand makes a whistling noise under your feet.
There are only two beaches in Europe where this happens, this hidden gem, known locally as Porth Oer, is definitely a place worth seeing.
Walking holiday company Mickledore say that visitors love Porthor for its rare squeaking sound, lovely views, and easy access.
The experts said: "Porthor’s gentle ‘song’ is rare and beautiful. It makes a simple walk feel magical. Where else can you step on the sand and have it sing back to you?"
As well as its singing sands, Porthor also gives you great views of the little islands of Dinas Bach and Dinas Fawr, where you might even spot grey seals relaxing in the sun.
It’s also perfectly placed for anyone walking the Wales Coast Path, and it’s a great starting point for heading out towards Mynydd Anelog, another spot known for its brilliant views.
If you want to hear the ‘whistling sands’ for yourself, you’ll need to go when the weather is right. Visit on a dry day, walk above the high tide line, and either shuffle along or step gently, and that’s when you might hear the squeak or whistle.

Visitors have left glowing reviews on TripAdvisor, with one saying: "This was our favourite beach on Llyn. More of a squeak than a whistle, but if you walk across the sand barefoot you’ll hear it! Dramatic cliffs, crystal clear water, lovely soft squeaky sand!"
Another said: "What a lovely sandy beach, great car park, lovely views with rock pools and a cave for the children to explore. Could hear the sand whistling under our feet, well worth a visit."
A third person, who sadly missed the sound, added: "Beautiful beach well worth a visit. Lovely coffee and cake in the café. Sand was quite wet so I didn’t get the whistling experience."
