Village with ‘amazing’ fish and chips that feels like a seaside resort, just without the sea

Hidden among the rolling hills of Derbyshire lies a lovely little village that feels just like a seaside town, only without the sea.

This lively spot, tucked away in the Peak District, is a favourite for families across the Midlands looking for a fun day out.

This hidden gem has been drawing visitors since the 17th century and was famously nicknamed “Little Switzerland” by Lord Byron because of its steep hillsides and beautiful scenery.

Today, it still has that same charm. With fish and chip shops, sweet shops, ice cream stalls and plenty of arcade games, it’s got all the fun of the seaside, just swap the sand and sea for riverside greenery, the flowing River Derwent and scenic walking trails.

Families have lots to keep them busy, whether they’re after something fun or a little more educational.

The Matlock Bath Aquarium and the Peak District Mining Museum are both just a short walk away, perfect for exploring in between tasty treats.

If you’re after a peaceful stroll, make sure to visit Lovers Walk. This pretty riverside path offers gorgeous views of the cliffs and colourful flowers, plus a park where you can stop and relax for a while.

On sunnier days, you can even hire a rowing boat and see Matlock Bath from the water. One thing that really makes the village stand out, though, is its food, especially its amazing choice of fish and chip shops, all lined up along the main street.

With around 10 chippies to choose from, you’ll have plenty of options to pick your favourite. But visitors on TripAdvisor seem to agree that one stands above the rest.

Tucker Fish and Chips has earned the title of the best-rated chippy in Matlock Bath, with an impressive 4.5-star review score.

One happy visitor wrote: “We go to Whitby every year, and as anyone will tell you, it can’t be beaten for fish and chips. Well, hold up.”

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
