Ancient castle filled with magic, set among rugged cliffs and crashing waves

If you want to experience the true heart of Cornwall, with its wild cliffs, powerful waves and rich history, Tintagel Castle is a place you simply have to visit.

Linked to the legend of King Arthur, the castle sits on a quiet island that can only be reached through its medieval gateway and across a striking footbridge.

The bridge is a highlight in itself, with many visitors stopping halfway to take photos or enjoy the incredible views.

You need a timed ticket to enter, but once you cross the bridge you can explore the island as you please.

You can wander around the ruins of the 13th century castle built by Richard, Earl of Cornwall.

The castle has an amazing story. Richard did not pick the site for its strength or defence, but because Tintagel already held historical importance.

Between the 5th and 7th centuries, Tintagel was an important Cornish stronghold and likely home to local rulers who traded far beyond Britain’s shores.

This is shown by pieces of fine Mediterranean pottery found there.

Many centuries later in the 1100s, this memory of a royal seat inspired writer Geoffrey of Monmouth to place Tintagel at the centre of Arthurian legend as the birthplace of King Arthur.

Tintagel is also a favourite with children. The Folktale Creature Trails give younger visitors something fun to follow, and at low tide, the magical Merlin’s Cave is open for exploring.

After all that adventure, the Beach Café is ready with pasties and ice cream, offering a perfect spot to relax before heading home.

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
