Nestled in Somerset is one of England’s most beautiful cathedral cities, where you can wander around markets, enjoy cider in cosy pubs and explore the stunning cathedral grounds.
It sits on the southern edge of the Mendip Hills, with the grand Wells Cathedral standing proudly at its centre, reports the Express.
Built between 1175 and 1490, Wells Cathedral is often said to be the most poetic of all English cathedrals, and it’s easy to understand why.
It was the first in England to be created in the Gothic style and is known around the world.
The cathedral is worth visiting just to admire its incredible design, but inside you’ll also find more than 300 sculptures, Britain’s oldest working mechanical clock, and daily tours that help tell the city’s long and fascinating story.
The city became even more famous after it was chosen as the filming location for the fictional village of Sandford in the much-loved film Hot Fuzz, starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and many other well-known British actors.
Many of the film’s best-known spots, like the Swan Hotel, the corner shop where Cornettos are bought, and the marketplace where the huge gunfight takes place, are real places that you can visit today.
Wells is also home to the oldest lived-in street in Europe. Vicars Close features lovely stone houses, cobbled paths and an amazing view of the cathedral, making it a brilliant spot for taking photos during your weekend visit.
The marketplace in front of the cathedral runs every Wednesday and Saturday, where visitors can pick up fresh food, tasty snacks and handmade items.
It’s perfect for a relaxed browse before heading to one of the city’s many pubs to enjoy a pint of Somerset cider.
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
