Cute seaside village tucked away and often missed because of its famous neighbours

If you are searching for your next coastal day out, this lovely little village could be just what you need.

Tucked between Saltburn and Whitby, this old fishing village is perfect for anyone who enjoys a gentle wander.

Its winding cobbled streets lead down to the harbour, and its cosy cottages painted in shades of red and cream make every corner of this Yorkshire spot feel picture perfect.

Once a busy fishing port, the village still holds on to its maritime roots, although these days it is better known for exploring than fishing.

You can visit its many small galleries and cafés, or head to the rocky beach where families spend hours looking for fossils and crabs.

With the Cleveland Way running right through the village, it is also a brilliant starting point for cliff top walks with amazing views over the North Sea.

Staithes is also well known for its artistic past, having been home to the Staithes Group of painters. Each year the Staithes Arts Festival brings open studios and creative displays to the whole village.

It is worth stopping by the Heritage Centre too, especially for its links to Captain Cook, who lived here for a time before beginning his famous sea journeys.

Staithes is great for families, although the steep streets may be tricky for prams.

If you are thinking about staying overnight, the village has lots of quaint cottages, many of them offering beautiful sea views.

Hidden between Saltburn and Whitby on the North Yorkshire coast, Staithes is easiest to reach by car.

From the A174, follow the signs that lead into the village. Parking is provided at the top of the hill, as cars are not allowed down in the lower part of the village.

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
