A pretty little hamlet tucked along the coast was once a quiet home for fishermen and their families.
Today the tiny village is loved for its scenery, its excellent restaurant and its wonderful pub.
Visitors say it is delightful and unspoilt, with beautiful coastal walks nearby, and many add that it does not feel too crowded with tourists.
The peaceful creek and village of Porthgain sits within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park in South Wales, and there is only one small road that leads in and out.
Described as a quintessential Welsh fishing village by Wales Cottage Holidays, charming Porthgain is still served by a small fishing fleet.
One of the old fishermen’s cottages is now a cosy pub called the Sloop Inn, which one visitor said was the best coastal pub in the county.
Equally well loved is the hamlet’s brilliant restaurant, The Shed, which is famous for its freshly caught local fish, including shellfish, all landed daily on the quay right in front of the bistro.
The atmospheric harbour has captured the hearts of many, with some saying Porthgain Harbour looks stunning even on a rainy day.
For such a tiny place, there are also a few interesting shops and a couple of excellent art galleries to explore.
One visitor described the village as picture postcard perfect, while another praised it as a peaceful haven during their stop.
Writing about their visit on TripAdvisor, one traveller said: “I guess this place could get very busy but the day I was there (early September) it wasn’t at all busy, and it was a lovely, peaceful and picturesque place.”
The unique hamlet looks straight over the water and, although half the village is owned as second homes, Porthgain has still managed to keep its charm.
Popular restaurant The Shed continues the tradition of serving freshly caught local fish, but if you are hoping to try the fish and chips or delicious seafood, it is best to book ahead, especially during busy periods such as December, according to locals.
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
