Frustrated locals demand NC500 is made illegal as visitors accused of ruining beauty spots

Locals living along the NC500 route are once again criticising tourists, complaining about how poorly visitors are treating one of Scotland’s most popular destinations.

The route through the Highlands is well-known among tourists in Scotland, but the increased number of visitors hasn’t gone down well with everyone.

Many locals are frustrated by the surge in attention, with several incidents involving tourists caught driving dangerously or speeding in the area.

Recently, locals have voiced their anger again, this time focusing on how tourists are treating the environment. They’re calling on local authorities to step in and do something about it.

Tourists have been blamed for overcrowding car parks with motorhomes and camper vans, and for packing small areas too tightly, which is causing harm to the local environment.

One local was so fed up, she took to Facebook to express her frustrations and shared her concerns with others in the Highlands.

She posted: "Just something I’ve noticed over the last few days around the Durness and Kinlochbervie areas. Most of the vans I saw parked outside of designated sites seemed to be from Europe.

"I did see some British number plates, but most of them were from abroad."

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
