The UK’s coastline is full of lovely seaside towns, each with its own character, history and friendly locals who bring the place to life.
Wales is famous for its coastal communities, many of which still show signs of Viking and Norman visits, with castles and old defences for people to explore.
One of these towns is lined with colourful houses, has its own castle, and lively pubs, all safely tucked behind a 13th-century stone wall that helps give it a cosy, shut-off feel.
Around two hours west of Cardiff brings you to the beautiful town of Tenby, where pastel Georgian houses sit proudly above the harbour, creating an unforgettable first impression.
The town has wide sandy beaches to enjoy, as well as boat trips over to Caldey Island, which you can reach from the harbour and is packed with its own fascinating past.
Families often head out to spot seals around the island, and there are also rib rides and cruises where you can watch the sun dip behind the water.
Close by sits Tenby Castle, set on a headland and separated from the rest of the town by a narrow strip of land. Its ancient town walls, built by the Normans, are still in wonderful condition.
Walkers and sightseers can also explore the 186 miles of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, which runs right by the town and offers some of the best views in Wales.
Visitors who have already been to this lovely spot say they were truly impressed, with many writing glowing five-star reviews and saying they plan to return whenever they can.
“Excellent area for a relaxing holiday, our first time in Tenby, but will be going back! We have already recommended to friends and family,” wrote user canim0151 on TripAdvisor.
The site sums up the town by saying “Tenby is lovingly protected from the outside world by an embrace of 13th-century stone walls, which, ironically, attract, not repel, visitors from all over the world.”
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
