A small village in the southwest has been picked as one of the area’s “most beautiful” thanks to its cobbled streets, charming views, and the many things to see and do.
This place in Dorset earned the title from South Western Railway, which highlighted its stunning scenery, nearby vineyard, and the three historic churches around the village.
It is best known as the filming spot for the famous 1973 Hovis advert, which was once voted Britain’s favourite TV commercial.
The advert shows a young baker pushing his bike up the steep, cobbled Gold Hill, which has now become “a huge attraction on its own”.
One tourist described the street as “picture-perfect and iconic”, saying there’s no need to walk up or down it, as the best viewpoint is from the top, which you can reach easily from the high street.
Another visitor said: “The view from the top, as well as looking like the ones you see on book covers, in films, on calendars and boxes, also gives you an amazing look across the Dorset countryside.”
At the top of the hill, where you get wonderful views, you’ll find the Gold Hill Museum. Inside there are eight rooms that share the history of the town and nearby countryside.
Visitors can see the old Byzant carried during water celebrations, Dorset’s oldest fire engine, handmade Dorset buttons, lacework, costumes and even a mummified Dorset cat.
Another popular spot is the Shaftesbury Abbey Museum and Garden, a Grade I listed site where visitors can wander through the remains of the Abbey Church, look at historic relics, and stroll through the peaceful walled gardens.
One visitor said about the Abbey: “We spent a lovely sunny afternoon exploring the beautiful ruins. It was really interesting and the staff were so friendly, passionate and helpful.”
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
