Pretty UK forest with waterfalls just three hours from Nottingham among the best walks in Britain

A beautiful forest filled with walking trails and waterfalls has been named the best place in the UK for an autumn walk.

The forest covers around 15 square miles and is mostly made up of tall pine and spruce trees.

It takes its name from the Afon Hafren, which means River Severn in Welsh, and the river begins in a deep peat bog about half a mile west of the forest on the slopes of Pumlumon, the highest mountain in central Wales.

Very quickly, the gentle stream turns into a fast flowing river, with waterfalls and cascades crashing through the trees, according to the Express.

The forest was created in 1937 and is always changing as trees are cut down and new ones are planted. It was built on land that once belonged to 12 upland sheep farms that were bought for the project.

Hidden within the woodland are old Bronze Age copper and lead mines, including Nant yr Eira and Nant yr Rickett.

Although the forest still provides timber for Natural Resources Wales, it has also grown into an important home for wildlife and a popular place for visitors.

A walk along the marked paths, which start from the main car park, is a great way to enjoy views of the river.

The longest trail takes you all the way to the Source of the Severn, just beyond the edge of the forest.

This route is 8.1 miles long and is described as strenuous, taking around five hours to complete. The Blaen Hafren Falls Trail, which offers lovely views of the waterfall, is the second longest walk.

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
