Scotland’s stunning hidden gem with lochs and charming villages is the ultimate getaway

Scotland is a country full of regions, each with its own charm and character.

While the 32 council areas and traditional counties all have something unique to offer, it’s often the lesser-known corners between them that reveal the country’s real beauty.

With Scotland recently seeing its warmest day in two years, many people are keen to escape busy city life. But with crowds chasing the same peaceful breaks, finding true tranquillity isn’t always easy.

One area, however, offers the perfect balance, and it’s closer to the Central Belt than you might think.

Hidden within Argyll and Bute, the Cowal Peninsula is often called Scotland’s “secret coast”.

While it’s not exactly off the map, this stunning stretch is dotted with hidden gems, from glittering sea lochs and rugged beaches to dramatic mountains and quiet villages, reports the Scottish Daily Express.

To the west lies Loch Fyne, while to the east sit Loch Long and the Firth of Clyde. In the north, the Arrochar Alps dominate the skyline with towering Munros, before the scenery softens into rolling green hills further south.

This contrast makes Cowal ideal for adventurers looking for a challenge, as well as those who prefer a slower, more relaxed pace of life.

At its heart is Dunoon, the main town of Cowal and a historic Clyde resort. Here, visitors can stroll along a traditional Victorian pier and a charming seafront promenade.

Dunoon is only just over an hour from Glasgow if you take the ferry from Gourock, or around two hours by car through winding mountain passes and scenic lochs.

Yet Dunoon is only the start. North of the town sits Benmore Botanic Garden, a 120-acre haven that’s famous for its majestic redwoods and exotic plant collections.

Nearby is Puck’s Glen, an enchanted forest walk that many consider one of Scotland’s most magical trails. Although it’s closed this summer, it remains a favourite with walkers.

Further north still is Lochgoilhead, a small village with a touch of Alpine charm on the shores of Loch Goil. Its remote setting, reached by narrow single-track roads, only adds to its appeal.

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
