An outdoor swimming spot has reported a huge rise in bacteria levels that could lead to serious and even life-threatening infections.
New figures show that the Serpentine Lido in Hyde Park, London, recorded a 1,188% increase in faecal contamination and E.coli levels last year.
E.coli is a dangerous bacteria that can cause diarrhoea, stomach cramps, fever and, in severe cases, kidney failure.
The Lido recorded just 45 counts of contamination in 2023, which jumped to 580 in 2024 amid wider concerns about pollution in UK waterways.
Even with this rise, the Environment Agency has rated the site as “sufficient,” meaning it still meets the lowest standard required for bathing areas in Britain.
Experts, however, have urged swimmers to stay aware of bacteria and pollution levels before entering the water.
They also say stricter rules and more frequent testing are needed to protect both the environment and public health.
Professor Davey Jones, a soil and environmental scientist at Bangor University, warned that bacteria in the water is “one of the biggest threats to human health.”
He explained: “Some forms of E.coli, like 0157, can get into groundwater from farm run-off and can be extremely dangerous, even in tiny amounts.”
He added: “With more people swimming outdoors, especially in big cities like London, it’s vital that we expand water testing to include viruses as well as bacteria.”
Amelia Hornsby from the Bathing Mobility Advisory Service (BMAS), which carried out the tests, said: “Keeping water quality high is crucial. It not only protects nature but also ensures communities and visitors can enjoy safe and healthy access to these waters.”
The Serpentine Lido was not the only wild swimming spot in London to see a problem last year. BMAS also found a 230% increase in E.coli at another site, rising from 100 in 2023 to 310 in 2024.
Concerns about poor water quality have been growing across the UK. Data revealed that many rivers, lakes and coastal spots failed to meet the minimum standard last year, sparking strong criticism of the government.
In response, ministers announced major changes to Bathing Water Regulations in March.
The updates include changing the legal definition of “bather,” removing fixed bathing season dates to allow flexible monitoring, and setting tougher rules for assessing new swimming sites.

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
