The enchanting UK village with charming countryside walks that feels untouched by time

Tucked along the banks of a peaceful river in Hampshire, there’s a village that looks like it’s been lifted straight from a postcard.

With its thatched cottages, winding lanes, and mysterious old legends, this hidden gem is one of England’s most beautiful spots, seemingly frozen in time.

It’s a favourite for walkers and nature lovers who come to enjoy the area’s stunning countryside trails.

Ancient oak trees line the quiet paths, and the gentle sound of the River Test flowing through the village adds to the calm and charm of the place.

One of Wherwell’s biggest highlights is its connection to the Test Way, a long-distance walking route that follows the River Test from Inkpen all the way to Eling, stretching for 44 miles.

The section between Longparish and West Down, which passes right through Wherwell, is especially scenic. It winds through open meadows and across wooden bridges, with fish sometimes leaping from the clear water below.

The village itself is a delight to explore. Its narrow lanes are lined with timber-framed cottages topped with thick, golden thatched roofs, creating a picture-perfect scene.

But Wherwell isn’t just charming, it’s also steeped in fascinating folklore.

According to local legend, the village was once home to a terrifying half-dragon, half-rooster beast known as the Wherwell Cockatrice, which was said to haunt the cellars of the old abbey.

The story goes that a duck laid an egg in the crypt of Wherwell Abbey, which was then brooded by a toad. When the egg hatched, out came the fearsome Cockatrice.

At first, the villagers treated it like a pet, but as it grew, it turned vicious, attacking locals and swooping down on its victims from above.

The creature became so feared that no one dared face it, until a man named Green came up with a clever plan. He lowered a shiny sheet of metal into its lair, and when the Cockatrice saw its own reflection, it attacked in fury.

Seizing his chance, Green struck it down with a javelin, ending the creature’s reign of terror and restoring peace to the little village of Wherwell.

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
