The picture-perfect UK seaside village that looks its prettiest in autumn

A stunning coastal village in the South West, described as a “timeless location,” has been named one of the UK’s prettiest autumn destinations.

While many people visit the seaside in summer, this hidden gem in Cornwall is just as magical in autumn, with its colourful views and peaceful atmosphere.

Fine and Country ranked this place among the “prettiest autumn villages” in Britain, calling it a “true jewel.”

The estate agent praised the “charming village store and nearby sandy beaches,” which it said are “perfect for autumn walks.”

Portloe sits within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and has appeared in several films and TV shows, including The Camomile Lawn, Disney’s Treasure Island, and Forever England.

In the heart of the village, visitors can enjoy a meal at The Lugger Hotel, which the Michelin Guide describes as “the kind of quiet and remote hotel where you go to make a getaway, not an entrance.”

The guide adds that dinner is “an elegant three-course experience with plenty of fine wines, featuring fresh seafood such as Portloe lobster and locally caught crab.” For something more casual, The Ship Inn also serves great food and drinks.

Surrounded by cliffs and rolling headlands, Portloe offers some of the most picturesque views and coastal walks in Cornwall.

One visitor wrote on TripAdvisor: “Like something from a postcard – tucked away and off the beaten path, but worth it for the sea-view rooms and breathtaking scenery.”

Another said: “One of those hidden gems we adore. Hard to find but so worth the journey.

There’s no real beach here, it’s still a working fishing village. One hotel, one pub, a few old fishing boats, and some beautiful houses overlooking the harbour.”

Others described it as a “lovely, timeless spot” with a “beautiful harbour.” One person added: “It’s a gorgeous place for a walk, with amazing views and a great way to spend a few relaxing hours.”

Another visitor said: “A pretty little cove that’s perfect for skimming stones and taking in the scenery. You can walk along the coastal path for a brilliant view back over the harbour and cliffs.”

However, they warned not to expect shops or amusements, adding: “This is all about peace, quiet, and the view, plus a coffee at The Lugger while watching the waves.”

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
